cóng xiǎo qiū xī xíng bǎi èr shí bù
From the small hill, go west for two hundred and twenty steps,

gé huáng zhú wén shuǐ shēng
Beyond the bamboo grove, hear the sound of water,

rú míng pèi huán xīn lè zhī
Like the ringing of jade pendants and jade rings, my heart is delighted by it.

fá zhú qǔ dào xià jiàn xiǎo tán
Cut down the bamboo to make a path, and below you will see a small pool,

shuǐ yóu qīng liè
The water is exceptionally clear and cold.

quán shí yǐ wéi dǐ jìn àn
The entire stone forms the bottom, close to the shore,

juǎn shí dǐ yǐ chū
Rolling stones out from the bottom,

wéi chí wéi yǔ wéi kān wéi yán
Creating islets, small islands, cliffs, and rocky peaks.

qīng shù cuì màn méng luò yáo zhuì
Green trees and lush vines, entwined and hanging,

cēn cī pī fú
Partly revealing and partly concealing, gently swaying.

tán zhōng yú kě bǎi xǔ tóu
In the pool, there are about a hundred fish,

jiē ruò kōng yóu wú suǒ yī
All seem to be swimming in the air with nothing to rely on.

rì guāng xià chè yǐng bù shí shàng yǐ rán bù dòng
日 光 下 澈 , 影 布 石 上 ,佁 然 不 动 ;
The sunlight penetrates through the water, casting shadows on the stones, motionless;

chù ěr yuǎn shì wǎng lái xī hū
Suddenly they swim away, coming and going in a hurry.

sì yǔ yóu zhě xiāng lè
It seems they are enjoying themselves with the visitors.

tán xī nán ér wàng
Looking towards the southwest of the pool,

dǒu zhé shé xíng míng miè kě jiàn
The shore twists and turns like a snake, its light and shadow flickering and visible.

qí àn shì quǎn yá cī hù bù kě zhī qí yuán
The shape of the shore is like a jagged-toothed dog, making it impossible to know its source.

zuò tán shàng sì miàn zhú shù huán hé
Sitting by the pool, surrounded by bamboo and trees on all sides,

jì liáo wú rén qī shén hán gǔ qiǎo chuàng yōu suì
Lonely and desolate, no one is around; a desolate and quiet place.

yǐ qí jìng guò qīng bù kě jiǔ jū
With a chilling atmosphere, it’s not suitable for long-term residence.

nǎi jì zhī ér qù
Thus record it and leave.
