Mulan Poem

nán běi cháo yì míng

jī jī fù jī jī， mù lán dāng hù zhī
唧 唧 复 唧 唧 ， 木 兰 当 户 织 。
Chirrup, chirrup once again, Mulan weaves at her door.

bù wén jī zhù shēng， wéi wén nǚ tàn xī
不 闻 机 杼 声 ， 惟 闻 女 叹 息 。
Not hearing the sound of the loom, only hearing the girl’s sighs.

wèn nǚ hé suǒ sī， wèn nǚ hé suǒ yì
问 女 何 所 思 ， 问 女 何 所 忆 。
Asking the girl what she thinks, asking the girl what she remembers.

nǚ yì wú suǒ sī， nǚ yì wú suǒ yì
女 亦 无 所 思 ， 女 亦 无 所 忆 。
The girl has no thoughts, the girl has no memories.

zuó yè jiàn jūn tiě， kè hán dà diǎn bīng
昨 夜 见 军 帖 ， 可 汗 大 点 兵 。
Last night she saw the military conscription list, the Khan ordered a large-scale mobilization of troops.

jūn shū shí èr juàn， juàn juàn yǒu yé míng
军 书 十 二 卷 ， 卷 卷 有 爷 名 ，
Twelve volumes of military books, each volume has her father’s name.

ā yé wú dà ér， mù lán wú zhǎng xiōng
阿 爷 无 大 儿 ， 木 兰 无 长 兄 ，
Her father has no elder son, Mulan has no older brother.

yuàn wèi shì ān mǎ， cóng cǐ tì yé zhēng
愿 为 市 鞍 马 ， 从 此 替 爷 征 。
She wishes to buy a saddle and horse, from now on to replace her father in the military expedition.

dōng shì mǎi jùn mǎ， xī shì mǎi ān jiān
东 市 买 骏 马 ， 西 市 买 鞍 鞯 ，
In the east market she buys a fine steed, in the west market she buys a saddle.

nán shì mǎi pèi tóu， běi shì mǎi cháng biān
南 市 买 辔 头 ， 北 市 买 长 鞭 。
In the south market she buys the bridle, in the north market she buys a long whip.

dàn cí yé niáng qù， mù sù huáng hé biān
旦 辞 爷 娘 去 ， 暮 宿 黄 河 边 ，
Leaving her parents at dawn, lodging by the Yellow River at dusk.

bù wén yé niáng huàn nǚ shēng
不 闻 爷 娘 唤 女 声 ，
Not hearing the call of father and mother,

dàn wén huáng hé liú shuǐ míng jiān jiān
但 闻 黄 河 流 水 鸣 溅 溅 。
But hearing the splashing sound of the Yellow River’s flow.

dàn cí huáng hé qù， mù zhì hēi shān tóu
旦 辞 黄 河 去 ， 暮 至 黑 山 头 ，
Bidding farewell to the Yellow River in the morning,

bù wén yé niáng huàn nǚ shēng
不 闻 爷 娘 唤 女 声 ，
In the evening, I arrive at the dark mountain’s peak.

dàn wén yān shān hú qí míng jiū jiū
但 闻 燕 山 胡 骑 鸣 啾 啾 。
Not hearing the call of father and mother,

wàn lǐ fù róng jī， guān shān dù ruò fēi
万 里 赴 戎 机 ， 关 山 度 若 飞 。
A thousand miles I rush to war, mountains and passes swiftly crossed.

shuò qì chuán jīn tuò， hán guāng zhào tiě yī
朔 气 传 金 柝 ， 寒 光 照 铁 衣 。
The northern air transmits the sound of metal drums, cold light shines upon the iron armor.

jiāng jūn bǎi zhàn sǐ， zhuàng shì shí nián guī
将 军 百 战 死 ， 壮 士 十 年 归 。
The general dies after a hundred battles, the warrior returns home after ten years.

guī lái jiàn tiān zǐ， tiān zǐ zuò míng táng
归 来 见 天 子 ， 天 子 坐 明 堂 。
Upon returning, she sees the Son of Heaven, who sits in the grand hall.

cè xūn shí èr zhuǎn， shǎng cì bǎi qiān qiáng
策 勋 十 二 转 ， 赏 赐 百 千 强 。
With a dozen awards for her merits, she is rewarded with wealth a thousandfold.

kè hán wèn suǒ yù， mù lán bù yòng shàng shū láng， yuàn chí qiān lǐ zú， sòng ér huán gù xiāng
可 汗 问 所 欲 ， 木 兰 不 用 尚 书 郎 ， 愿 驰 千 里 足 ， 送 儿 还 故 乡 。
The Khan asks what she desires, Mulan does not wish for the position of a high official, but longs for a swift steed to send her back to her hometown.

yé niáng wén nǚ lái， chū guō xiāng fú jiāng
爷 娘 闻 女 来 ， 出 郭 相 扶 将 ；
Her parents, upon hearing of their daughter’s return, go out to meet her, supporting each other.

ā zǐ wén mèi lái， dāng hù lǐ hóng zhuāng
阿 姊 闻 妹 来 ， 当 户 理 红 妆 ；
Her sister, upon hearing of her sister’s return, prepares her red makeup by the door.

xiǎo dì wén zǐ lái， mó dāo huò huò xiàng zhū yáng， kāi wǒ dōng gé mén， zuò wǒ xī gé chuáng
小 弟 闻 姊 来 ， 磨 刀 霍 霍 向 猪 羊 。 开 我 东 阁 门 ， 坐 我 西 阁 床 ，
Her younger brother, upon hearing of his sister’s return, sharpens his knife and readies the pigs and sheep.

tuō wǒ zhàn shí páo， zhuó wǒ jiù shí cháng
脱 我 战 时 袍 ， 著 我 旧 时 裳 。
Open my eastern chamber door, sit on my western chamber bed.

dāng chuāng lǐ yún bìn， duì jìng tiē huā huáng
当 窗 理 云 鬓 ， 对 镜 帖 花 黄 。
Take off my wartime robe, put on my old衣裳.

chū mén kàn huǒ bàn， huǒ bàn jiē jīng máng
出 门 看 火 伴 ， 火 伴 皆 惊 忙 ：
By the window, I comb my cloud-like hair, in front of the mirror, I apply my yellow flowers.

tóng háng shí èr nián， bù zhī mù lán shì nǚ láng
同 行 十 二 年 ， 不 知 木 兰 是 女 郎 。
Go out to see my fellow soldiers, they are all surprised and busy:

xióng tù jiǎo pū shuòm， cí tù yǎn mí lí， shuāng tù bàng dì zǒu， ān néng biàn wǒ shì xióng cí
雄 兔 脚 扑 朔 ， 雌 兔 眼 迷 离 ； 双 兔 傍 地 走 ， 安 能 辨 我 是 雄 雌 ？
We have been together for twelve years, yet none knew Mulan was a woman.
