In the sixth year of the Yuanfeng era, on the night of the twelfth day of the tenth month,
jiě yī yù shuì yuè sè rù hù xīn rán qǐ xíng
I undressed and was about to sleep when the moonlight entered my room, filling me with delight and prompting me to get up and walk around.
niàn wú yǔ wéi lè zhě
Thinking of no one to share this joy with,
suì zhì chéng tiān sì xún zhāng huái mín
I went to the Chengtian Temple to look for Zhang Huaimin.
huái mín yì wèi qǐn xiāng yǔ bù yú zhōng tíng
Huaimin was also not asleep, so we strolled together in the courtyard.
tíng xià rú jī shuǐ kōng míng
The courtyard below seemed like a pool of clear water,
shuǐ zhōng zǎo xìng jiāo héng
With algae and water plants crisscrossing in the water,
gài zhú bǎi yǐng yě
Which were actually the shadows of bamboo and cypress trees.
hé yè wú yuè
What night is without moonlight?
hé chù wú zhú bǎi
Where are there no bamboo and cypress trees?
dàn shǎo xián rén rú wú liǎng rén zhě ěr
But there are few idle people like us two.
