River Middle Stone Beast

qīng jǐ yún

(Qing) Ji Yun

cāng zhōu nán yī sì lín hé gān
沧 州 南 一 寺 临 河 干 ，
Cangzhou, a temple south of the riverbank,

shān mén pǐ yú hé èr shí shòu bìng chén yān
山 门 圮 于 河 ， 二 石 兽 并 沉 焉 。
The mountain gate collapsed into the river, two stone beasts sank together.

yuè shí yú suì sēng mù jīn chóng xiū
阅 十 余 岁 ， 僧 募 金 重 修 ，
After more than ten years, the monk raised funds to rebuild,

qiú èr shí shòu yú shuǐ zhōng jìng bù kě dé
求 二 石 兽 于 水 中 ， 竟 不 可 得 。
Sought the two stone beasts in the water, but could not find them.

yǐ wéi shùn liú xià yǐ
以 为 顺 流 下 矣 ，
Thinking they had drifted downstream,

zhào shù xiǎo zhōu yè tiě pá
棹 数 小 舟 ， 曳 铁 钯 ，
He paddled several small boats, dragging iron rakes,

xún shí yú lǐ wú jì
寻 十 余 里 无 迹 。
Searched for more than ten miles with no trace.

yī jiǎng xué jiā shè zhàng sì zhōng
一 讲 学 家 设 帐 寺 中 ，
A scholar set up his teaching tent in the temple,

wén zhī xiào yuē ěr bèi bù néng jiū wù lǐ
闻 之 笑 曰 ：“ 尔 辈 不 能 究 物 理 ，
Upon hearing this, he laughed and said: “You lot cannot understand the principles of physics,

shì fēi mù fèi qǐ néng wéi bào zhǎng xié zhī qù
是 非 木 杮 ， 岂 能 为 暴 涨 携 之 去 ？
These are not wooden fruits, how could they be carried away by a sudden flood?

nǎi shí xìng jiān zhòng shā xìng sōng fú
乃 石 性 坚 重 ， 沙 性 松 浮 ，
It is the nature of stone to be heavy and firm, while sand is loose and fluffy,

yān yú shā shàng jiàn chén jiàn shēn ěr
湮 于 沙 上 ， 渐 沉 渐 深 耳 。
Buried on the sand, they gradually sink deeper and deeper.

yán hé qiú zhī bù yì diān hū
沿 河 求 之 ， 不 亦 颠 乎 ？”
Searching along the river, isn’t that absurd?”

zhòng fú wéi què lùn
众 服 为 确 论 。
Everyone agreed with his conclusive argument.

yī lǎo hé bīng wén zhī yòu xiào yuē
一 老 河 兵 闻 之 ， 又 笑 曰 ：
An old river soldier heard this and also laughed, saying:

fán hé zhōng shī shí dāng qiú zhī yú shàng liú
“ 凡 河 中 失 石 ， 当 求 之 于 上 流 。
“Whenever a stone is lost in the river, it should be sought upstream.

gài shí xìng jiān zhòng shā xìng sōng fú
盖 石 性 坚 重 ， 沙 性 松 浮 ，
For the nature of stone is heavy and firm, while sand is loose and fluffy,

shuǐ bù néng chōng shí qí fǎn jī zhī lì
水 不 能 冲 石 ， 其 反 激 之 力 ，
Water cannot wash away the stone; the反向 force (counter force) of it,

bì yú shí xià yíng shuǐ chù niè shā wéi kǎn xué
必 于 石 下 迎 水 处 啮 沙 为 坎 穴 ，
Must gnaw at the sand in front of the stone against the water current, creating a pit or cavity.

jiàn jī jiàn shēn zhì shí zhī bàn
渐 激 渐 深 ， 至 石 之 半 ，
Gradually, it becomes deeper and deeper, until it reaches halfway up the stone.

shí bì dǎo zhì kǎn xué zhōng
石 必 倒 掷 坎 穴 中 。
The stone must inevitably topple and roll into the pit.

rú shì zài niè shí yòu zài zhuàn
如 是 再 啮 ， 石 又 再 转 。
If it gnaws again, the stone will turn again.

zhuǎn zhuàn bù yǐ suì fǎn sù liú nì shàng yǐ
转 转 不 已 ， 遂 反 溯 流 逆 上 矣 。
Turning incessantly, it eventually goes against the current and swims upstream.

qiú zhī xià liú gù diān
求 之 下 流 ， 固 颠 ；
Seeking it downstream, it is indeed inverted;

qiú zhī dì zhōng bù gèng diān hū
求 之 地 中 ， 不 更 颠 乎 ？”
Seeking it in the middle of the ground, is it not even more inverted?

rú qí yán guǒ dé yú shù lǐ wài
如 其 言 ， 果 得 于 数 里 外 。
As they said, it was indeed found several miles away.

rán zé tiān xià zhī shì
然 则 天 下 之 事 ，
Then, there are many things in the world,

dàn zhī qí yī bù zhī qí èr zhě duō yǐ
但 知 其 一 ， 不 知 其 二 者 多 矣 ，
Only knowing one aspect, but not knowing the other,

kě jù lǐ yì duàn yú
可 据 理 臆 断 欤 ？
Can we make hasty conclusions based on reason alone?
