Song of the Thatched Hut Torn by the Autumn Wind
táng dù fǔ
(Tang) Du Fu
bā yuè qiū gāo fēng nù háo
In August, the autumn wind roars high,
juǎn wǒ wū shàng sān chóng máo
It rolls up the thatched roof of my house, three layers thick.
máo fēi dù jiāng sǎ jiāng jiāo
The thatch flies across the river, scattering over the riverside.
gāo zhě guà juàn cháng lín shāo
Higher ones get entangled on the treetops of the vast forest.
xià zhě piāo zhuǎn chén táng ào
Those below drift and swirl, sinking into the pond’s hollows
nán cūn qún tóng qī wǒ lǎo wú lì
The children in the southern village mock me for being old and feeble,
rěn néng duì miàn wéi dào zéi
Enduring the face-to-face theft,
gōng rán bào máo rù zhú qù
Boldly carrying thatch into the bamboo grove.
chún jiāo kǒu zào hū bù dé
My lips are parched and my mouth is dry, I can’t even shout,
guī lái yǐ zhàng zì tàn xī
Returning, I lean on my cane and sigh in despair.
é qǐng fēng dìng yún mò sè
In a moment, the wind subsides and the clouds turn dark,
qiū tiān mò mò xiàng hūn hēi
The desolate autumn sky darkens towards dusk.
bù qīn duō nián lěng sì tiě
My worn-out quilt, cold like iron for years,
jiāo ér è wò tà lǐ liè
My delicate child, unable to sleep well, tramples and tears it apart.
chuáng tóu wū lòu wú gān chù
By the bedside, the leaking roof has no dry spot,
yǔ jiǎo rú má wèi duàn jué
The raindrops fall like hemp, never-ending.
zì jīng sāng luàn shǎo shuì mián
Since the turmoil, I’ve had little sleep,
cháng yè zhān shī hé yóu chè
How can I endure the long, damp night!
ān dé guǎng shà qiān wàn jiān
Oh, to have thousands of spacious houses,
dà bì tiān xià hán shì jù huān yán
To shelter the poor scholars, bringing smiles to their faces!
fēng yǔ bù dòng ān rú shān
Unmoved by wind and rain, as stable as a mountain.
wū hū hé shí yǎn qián tū wù xiàn cǐ wū
Alas! When will I see such a house before my eyes,
wú lú dú pò shòu dòng sǐ yì zú
My own hut remains broken, and I would be content to freeze to death!
