ONCE upon a time there lived in a certain village a little country girl, the prettiest creature was ever seen. —
从前，在一个小村庄里住着一个非常漂亮的小乡村女孩。 —

Her mother was excessively fond of her; —
她的母亲非常宠爱她; —

and her grandmother doted on her still more. —
而她的祖母更是宠爱她的不得了。 —

This good woman had made for her a little red riding-hood; —
这位善良的女人为她做了一顶小红帽; —

which became the girl so extremely well that everybody called her Little Red Riding-Hood.
这个红帽子非常适合她，所以大家都叫她小红帽。

One day her mother, having made some custards, said to her:
一天，她的母亲做了一些焦羊羹，对她说:

“Go, my dear, and see how thy grandmamma does, for I hear she has been very ill; —
“亲爱的，去看看奶奶怎么样，因为我听说她病得很重; —

carry her a custard, and this little pot of butter.”
给她带个焦羊羹和这个小罐黄油。”

Little Red Riding-Hood set out immediately to go to her grandmother, who lived in another village.
小红帽立刻出发去她住在另一个村庄的奶奶家。

As she was going through the wood, she met with Gaffer Wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he dared not, because of some faggot-makers hard by in the forest. —
当她走过树林时，她遇到了爷爷狼，他非常想吃掉她，但害怕附近的一些柴火工人。 —

He asked her whither she was going. —
他问她要去哪儿。 —

The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and hear a wolf talk, said to him:
这个可怜的孩子不知道听狼说话是危险的，对他说:

“I am going to see my grandmamma and carry her a custard and a little pot of butter from my mamma.”
“我要去看望我的奶奶,给她带来一杯奶黄和一小罐黄油,是我妈妈送给她的。”

“Does she live far off?” said the Wolf.
“她住得远吗？”狼问道。

“Oh! ay,” answered Little Red Riding-Hood; —
“哦！是的，”小红帽回答说; —

“it is beyond that mill you see there, at the first house in the village.”
“就在你看到那边的磨坊后面，是村子里的第一座房子。”

“Well,” said the Wolf, “and I’ll go and see her too. —
“好吧，”狼说，“我也要去看她。 —

I’ll go this way and you go that, and we shall see who will be there soonest.”
我走这边，你走那边，我们看看谁先到那里。”

The Wolf began to run as fast as he could, taking the nearest way, and the little girl went by that farthest about, diverting herself in gathering nuts, running after butterflies, and making nosegays of such little flowers as she met with. —
狼开始全速奔跑，走最近的路，小女孩则走最远的路，玩得很开心地摘果子，追蝴蝶，采集她遇到的小花束。 —

The Wolf was not long before he got to the old woman’s house. —
狼没有多久就到了老太太的家。 —

He knocked at the door — tap, tap.
他敲了敲门——叩叩。

“Who’s there?”
“是谁？”

“Your grandchild, Little Red Riding-Hood,” replied the Wolf, counterfeiting her voice; —
“是你的孙女，小红帽，”狼假装她的声音说； —

“who has brought you a custard and a little pot of butter sent you by mamma.”
“给你带来了妈妈送来的奶黄和一小罐黄油。”

The good grandmother, who was in bed, because she was somewhat ill, cried out
善良的外婆正躺在床上，因为有些生病，喊道

“Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go up.”
“拽住线轴，门闩就会开门。”

The Wolf pulled the bobbin, and the door opened, and then presently he fell upon the good woman and ate her up in a moment, for it was above three days that he had not touched a bit. —
狼拽住线轴，门就打开了，然后它立刻扑向善良的女人，一下子把她吞了下去，因为它已经三天没有吃东西了。 —

He then shut the door and went into the grandmother’s bed, expecting Little Red Riding-Hood, who came some time afterward and knocked at the door — tap, tap.
然后它关上门，进入外婆的床上，等待着小红帽。小红帽过了一会儿，敲了敲门 — 嗒，嗒。

“Who’s there?”
“是谁？”

Little Red Riding-Hood, hearing the big voice of the Wolf, was at first afraid; —
小红帽听到狼的沉重声音，一开始很害怕； —

but believing her grandmother had got a cold and was hoarse, answered:
但是她相信外婆可能感冒了，嗓子变哑了，回答道:

“ ’Tis your grandchild, Little Red Riding-Hood, who has brought you a custard and a little pot of butter mamma sends you.”
“是你的孙女小红帽，妈妈给您带来了一个布丁和一个小罐黄油。”

The Wolf cried out to her, softening his voice as much as he could:
狼对她喊道，尽量温和地用嗓音:

“Pull the bobbin, and the latch will go up.”
“拽住线轴，门闩会开门。”

Little Red Riding-Hood pulled the bobbin, and the door opened.
小红帽拽住线轴，门打开了。

The Wolf, seeing her come in, said to her, hiding himself under the bed-clothes:
狼看见她走进来，藏在床单下面对她说：

“Put the custard and the little pot of butter upon the stool, and come and lie down with me.”
“把布丁和小罐黄油放到凳子上，然后过来和我躺下。”

Little Red Riding-Hood undressed herself and went into bed, where, being greatly amazed to see how her grandmother looked in her night-clothes, she said to her:
小红帽脱衣服上床，看到奶奶穿着睡衣感到非常惊讶，她对她说：

“Grandmamma, what great arms you have got!”
“奶奶，你的胳膊真大！”

“That is the better to hug thee, my dear.”
“这样更容易拥抱你，亲爱的。”

“Grandmamma, what great legs you have got!”
“奶奶，你的腿真大！”

“That is to run the better, my child.”
“这样跑得更快，孩子。”

“Grandmamma, what great ears you have got!”
“奶奶，你的耳朵真大！”

“That is to hear the better, my child.”
“这样听得更清楚，孩子。”

“Grandmamma, what great eyes you have got!”
“奶奶，你的眼睛真大！”

“It is to see the better, my child.”
“这样看得更清楚，孩子。”

“Grandmamma, what great teeth you have got!”
“奶奶，你的牙齿真大！”

“That is to eat thee up.”
“这是为了把你吃掉。”

And, saying these words, this wicked wolf fell upon Little Red Riding-Hood, and ate her all up.
说完这些话，邪恶的狼扑向小红帽，把她吃掉了。
