yù zhāng gù jùn hóng dū xīn fǔ
豫 章 故 郡 , 洪 都 新 府 。
The old district of Yuzhang, the new prefecture of Hongdu.
xīng fēn yì zhěn dì jiē héng lú
星 分 翼 轸 , 地 接 衡 庐 。
Stars are divided into Yizhong and Zhefu, the land connects Hengyang and Lushan.
jīn sān jiāng ér dài wǔ hú kòng mán jīng ér yǐn ōu yuè
襟 三 江 而 带 五 湖 , 控 蛮 荆 而 引 瓯 越 。
With three rivers as its lapels and five lakes as its sash, it controls the wild Jing and leads to the distant Ou Yue.
wù huá tiān bǎo lóng guāng shè niú dǒu zhī xū
物 华 天 宝 , 龙 光 射 牛 斗 之 墟 ;
Nature’s splendor is a treasure, and the dragon’s light shines on the ruins of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.
rén jié dì líng xú rú xià chén fān zhī tà xióng zhōu wù liè jùn cǎi xīng chí
人 杰 地 灵 , 徐 孺 下 陈 蕃 之 榻 。 雄 州 雾 列 , 俊 采 星 驰 。
A place becomes remarkable because of remarkable people, as Xu Ruzi dismounted by Chen Fan’s couch. The mists spread over Xiongzhou, and the brilliant ones shine like stars speeding across the sky.
tái huáng zhěn yí xià zhī jiāo bīn zhǔ jìn dōng nán zhī měi
台 隍 枕 夷 夏 之 交 , 宾 主 尽 东 南 之 美 。
At the boundary of Yi and Xia, the host and guest enjoy the beauty of the southeast.
dū du yán gōng zhī yǎ wàng qǐ jǐ yáo lín
都 督 阎 公 之 雅 望 , 棨 戟 遥 临 ;
The esteemed Duan Gong, the military governor, is expected to arrive from afar;
yǔ wén xīn zhōu zhī yì fàn chān wéi zàn zhù
宇 文 新 州 之 懿 范 , 襜 帷 暂 驻 。
Wen Xinzhou, with his noble example, temporarily resides here.
shí xún xiū jià shèng yǒu rú yún
十 旬 休 假 , 胜 友 如 云 ;
During the ten-day vacation, friends gather like clouds;
qiān lǐ féng yíng gāo péng mǎn zuò
千 里 逢 迎 , 高 朋 满 座 。
From afar, a thousand miles, distinguished guests fill the seats.
téng jiāo qǐ fèng mèng xué shì zhī cí zōng
腾 蛟 起 凤 , 孟 学 士 之 词 宗 ;
Soaring dragons and rising phoenixes, the poetic essence of Master Meng;
zǐ diàn qīng shuāng wáng jiāng jūn zhī wǔ kù
紫 电 清 霜 , 王 将 军 之 武 库 。
Purple lightning and clear frost, the military arsenal of General Wang;
jiā jūn zuò zǎi lù chū míng qū tóng zǐ hé zhī gōng féng shèng jiàn
家 君 作 宰 , 路 出 名 区 ; 童 子 何 知 , 躬 逢 胜 饯 。
My lord serves as a governor, traveling through the famous regions;
shí wéi jiǔ yuè xù shǔ sān qiū
时 维 九 月 , 序 属 三 秋 。
How could a young servant know, to personally witness such a splendid farewell.
lǎo shuǐ jìn ér hán tán qīng yān guāng níng ér mù shān zǐ
潦 水 尽 而 寒 潭 清 , 烟 光 凝 而 暮 山 紫 。
It is the ninth month, belonging to the third autumn.
yǎn cān fēi yú shàng lù fǎng fēng jǐng yú chóng ē
俨 骖 騑 于 上 路 , 访 风 景 于 崇 阿 。
Floodwaters recede, leaving the cold pool clear; the smoky light congeals, and the evening mountains turn purple.
lín dì zǐ zhī cháng zhōu dé tiān rén zhī jiù guǎn
临 帝 子 之 长 洲 , 得 天 人 之 旧 馆 。
Arrayed on the high road, visiting the scenery atop the sacred hills.
céng luán sǒng cuì shàng chū chóng xiāo
层 峦 耸 翠 , 上 出 重 霄 ;
Beholding the long isle of the imperial son, obtaining the ancient residence of celestial beings.
fēi gé liú dān xià lín wú dì hè tīng fú zhǔ qióng dǎo yǔ zhī yíng huí
飞 阁 流 丹 , 下 临 无 地 。 鹤 汀 凫 渚 , 穷 岛 屿 之 萦 回 ;
Layered peaks rise in emerald green, reaching beyond the double skies;
guì diàn lán gōng jí gāng luán zhī tǐ shì
桂 殿 兰 宫 , 即 冈 峦 之 体 势 。
Flying pavilions with flowing vermilion, overlooking the boundless expanse below. Cranes and ducks on the islets, tracing the intricate isles and reefs;
pī xiù tà fǔ diāo méng shān yuán kuàng qí yíng shì chuān zé yū qí hài zhǔ
披 绣 闼 , 俯 雕 甍 , 山 原 旷 其 盈 视 , 川 泽 纡 其 骇 瞩 。
Palaces of cassia and orchid, blending with the contours of the hills and mounds.
lǘ yán pū dì zhōng míng dǐng shí zhī jiā
闾 阎 扑 地 , 钟 鸣 鼎 食 之 家 ;
Unveiling the embroidered doors, gazing at the carved eaves; the plains and fields stretch to fill the view, while rivers and lakes wind through the startling gaze.
gě jiàn mí jīn qīng què huáng lóng zhī zhú yún xiāo yǔ jì cǎi chè qū míng
舸 舰 弥 津 , 青 雀 黄 龙 之 舳 。 云 销 雨 霁 , 彩 彻 区 明 。
Neighborhoods sprawling on the ground, homes with bells ringing and fine dining;
luò xiá yǔ gū wù qí fēi qiū shuǐ gòng cháng tiān yī sè
落 霞 与 孤 鹜 齐 飞 , 秋 水 共 长 天 一 色 。
Boats and warships crowding the river crossings, the prows of azure sparrows and yellow dragons. Clouds disperse, rain clears, and the area brightens.
yú zhōu chàng wǎn xiǎng qióng péng lǐ zhī bīn
渔 舟 唱 晚 , 响 穷 彭 蠡 之 滨 ,
The setting sun’s glow and solitary ducks fly together; autumn waters share the same hue with the vast sky.
yàn zhèn jīng hán shēng duàn héng yáng zhī pǔ
雁 阵 惊 寒 , 声 断 衡 阳 之 浦 。
Fishermen’s boats sing in the evening, echoing along the shores of Pengli;
yáo jīn fǔ chàng yì xìng chuán fēi
遥 襟 甫 畅 , 逸 兴 遄 飞 。
Goose formations startled by the cold, their calls cut off at the banks of Hengyang.
shuǎng lài fā ér qīng fēng shēng , xiān gē níng ér bái yún è
爽 籁 发 而 清 风 生 , 纤 歌 凝 而 白 云 遏 。
Distant collars just opened wide, soaring spirits swiftly take flight.
suī yuán lǜ zhú qì líng péng zé zhī zūn
睢 园 绿 竹 , 气 凌 彭 泽 之 樽 ;
The sound of the flute arises, bringing forth a gentle breeze; the delicate song solidifies, halting the white clouds.
yè shuǐ zhū huá guāng zhào lín chuān zhī bǐ
邺 水 朱 华 , 光 照 临 川 之 笔 。
The green bamboo of Sui Garden, its aura surpassing the goblets of Pengze;
sì měi jù èr nán bìng 。 qióng dì miǎn yú zhōng tiān jí yú yóu yú xiá rì
四 美 具 , 二 难 并 。 穷 睇 眄 于 中 天 , 极 娱 游 于 暇 日 。
Four beauties are present, two difficulties coexist. Amidst the azure sky, gazing in admiration; on leisure days, indulging in pleasure and tourism.
tiān gāo dì jiǒng jué yǔ zhòu zhī wú qióng ; xìng jìn bēi lái shí yíng xū zhī yǒu shù
天 高 地 迥 , 觉 宇 宙 之 无 穷 ; 兴 尽 悲 来 , 识 盈 虚 之 有 数 。
The sky is high and the earth is vast, realizing the boundlessness of the universe; joy ends and sorrow comes, recognizing the cycles of abundance and emptiness.
wàng cháng ān yú rì xià mù wú kuài yú yún jiān
望 长 安 于 日 下 , 目 吴 会 于 云 间 。
Gazing at Chang’an under the sun, looking at the Wu gathering among the clouds.
dì shì jí ér nán míng shēn tiān zhù gāo ér běi chén yuǎn
地 势 极 而 南 溟 深 , 天 柱 高 而 北 辰 远 。
The land’s terrain is extreme, and the Southern Ocean is deep; the celestial pillar is high, and the North Star is far away.
guān shān nán yuè shuí bēi shī lù zhī rén
关 山 难 越 , 谁 悲 失 路 之 人 ;
Difficult to cross the mountain passes, who mourns for those who lose their way;
píng shuǐ xiāng féng jìn shì tā xiāng zhī kè
萍 水 相 逢 , 尽 是 他 乡 之 客 。
Encountering like duckweed on water, all are strangers from other lands.
huái dì hūn ér bù jiàn fèng xuān shì yǐ hé nián
怀 帝 阍 而 不 见 , 奉 宣 室 以 何 年 ?
Yearning for the imperial gate but unable to see it, in what year shall I serve in the Xuan room?
jiē hū shí yùn bù jì mìng tú duō chuǎn
嗟 乎 ! 时 运 不 齐 , 命 途 多 舛 。
Alas! Fortunes are uneven, and life’s path is full of twists and turns.
féng táng yì lǎo lǐ guǎng nán fēng
冯 唐 易 老 , 李 广 难 封 。
Feng Tang ages easily, Li Guang finds it hard to be ennobled.
qū jiǎ yì yú cháng shā fēi wú shèng zhǔ
屈 贾 谊 于 长 沙 , 非 无 圣 主 ;
Jia Yi is wronged in Changsha, not for the lack of a sage ruler;
cuàn liáng hóng yú hǎi qū qǐ fá míng shí
窜 梁 鸿 于 海 曲 , 岂 乏 明 时 ?
Hopping through the beams and songs of the sea, is there really no bright time?
suǒ lài jūn zi jiàn jī dá rén zhī mìng
所 赖 君 子 见 机 , 达 人 知 命 。
Relying on the gentleman’s insight, the wise man knows his destiny.
lǎo dāng yì zhuàng nìng yí bái shǒu zhī xīn
老 当 益 壮 , 宁 移 白 首 之 心 ?
In old age, one should become even stronger; why change the heart of a white-haired person?
qióng qiě yì jiān bù zhuì qīng yún zhī zhì
穷 且 益 坚 , 不 坠 青 云 之 志 。
In poverty, one should become even more resolute; never give up the ambition to reach the blue clouds.
zhuó tān quán ér jué shuǎng chǔ hé zhé yǐ yóu huān
酌 贪 泉 而 觉 爽 , 处 涸 辙 以 犹 欢 。
Drinking from the greedy spring and feeling refreshed, still joyful even in a dried-up rut.
běi hǎi suī shē fú yáo kě jiē
北 海 虽 赊 , 扶 摇 可 接 ;
Although the North Sea is far away, one can still reach it with the help of the rising wind;
dōng yú yǐ shì sāng yú fēi wǎn
东 隅 已 逝 , 桑 榆 非 晚 。
The eastern corner has passed, but the mulberry and elm are not too late.
mèng cháng gāo jié kòng yú bào guó zhī qíng
孟 尝 高 洁 , 空 余 报 国 之 情 ;
Meng Chang’s high purity, with only the remaining sentiment of serving the country;
ruǎn jí chāng kuáng qǐ xiào qióng tú zhī kū
阮 籍 猖 狂 , 岂 效 穷 途 之 哭 !
Ruan Ji’s madness, how could one imitate the cry of a desperate journey!
bó sān chǐ wēi mìng yī jiè shū shēng
勃 , 三 尺 微 命 , 一 介 书 生 。
Bo, a three-foot weak life, just a single scholar.
wú lù qǐng yīng děng zhōng jūn zhī ruò guàn
无 路 请 缨 , 等 终 军 之 弱 冠 ;
With no way to request a silk ribbon, I can only wait with the weakness of a military officer;
yǒu huái tóu bǐ mù zōng què zhī cháng fēng
有 怀 投 笔 , 慕 宗 悫 之 长 风 。
Having the ambition to throw away the pen, admiring the long wind of Zong Que.
shě zān hù yú bǎi líng fèng chén hūn yú wàn lǐ
舍 簪 笏 于 百 龄 , 奉 晨 昏 于 万 里 。
Leaving behind the hairpin and tablet at the age of a hundred, serving the morning and evening at the distance of ten thousand miles.
fēi xiè jiā zhī bǎo shù jiē mèng shì zhī fāng lín
非 谢 家 之 宝 树 , 接 孟 氏 之 芳 邻 。
Not the treasured tree of the Xie family, but connecting with the fragrant neighbor of the Meng family.
tā rì qū tíng tāo péi lǐ duì jīn zī pěng mèi xǐ tuō lóng mén
他 日 趋 庭 , 叨 陪 鲤 对 ; 今 兹 捧 袂 , 喜 托 龙 门 。
On the day when I approach the courtyard, I accompany the carp; today, holding my sleeves, I am happy to lean on the dragon’s gate.
yáng yì bù féng fǔ líng yún ér zì xī
杨 意 不 逢 , 抚 凌 云 而 自 惜 ;
Yang Yi’s unfulfilled ambition, caressing the towering clouds and feeling self-pity;
zhōng qī jì yù zòu liú shuǐ yǐ hé cán
钟 期 既 遇 , 奏 流 水 以 何 惭 ?
Since I have met Zhong Qi, why should I be ashamed to play the flowing water?
wū hū shèng dì bù cháng shèng yán nán zài
呜 乎 ! 胜 地 不 常 , 盛 筵 难 再 ;
Alas! The perfect place is not always there, and the grand feast is hard to come by again;
lán tíng yǐ yǐ zǐ zé qiū xū
兰 亭 已 矣 , 梓 泽 丘 墟 。
The Orchid Pavilion is gone, and the Zizai hills are now in ruins.
lín bié zèng yán xìng chéng ēn yú wěi jiàn dēng gāo zuò fù
临 别 赠 言 , 幸 承 恩 于 伟 饯 ; 登 高 作 赋 ,
As we part, I give you a gift of words, fortunate to receive the grace of a great farewell feast; composing a poem while climbing high,
shì suǒ wàng yú qún gōng
是 所 望 于 群 公 。
Is the expectation of the public.
gǎn jié bǐ huái gōng shū duǎn yǐn
敢 竭 鄙 怀 , 恭 疏 短 引 ;
Dare to exhaust my humble thoughts, respectfully writing a brief introduction;
yī yán jūn fù sì yùn jù chéng
一 言 均 赋 , 四 韵 俱 成 。
One word for the uniform distribution, four rhymes all completed.
qǐng sǎ pān jiāng gè qīng lù hǎi yún ěr
请 洒 潘 江 , 各 倾 陆 海 云 尔 :
Please pour out the Panjiang, each pouring out the clouds of the land and sea:
téng wáng gāo gé lín jiāng zhǔ pèi yù míng luán bà gē wǔ
滕 王 高 阁 临 江 渚 , 佩 玉 鸣 鸾 罢 歌 舞 。
Prince Teng’s tall pavilion overlooks the river islet, with jade ornaments and chiming phoenixes signaling the end of songs and dances.
huà dòng zhāo fēi nán pǔ yún zhū lián mù juǎn xī shān yǔ
画 栋 朝 飞 南 浦 云 , 珠 帘 暮 卷 西 山 雨 。
Painted beams fly towards the southern shore clouds in the morning, beaded curtains roll up the western mountain rain in the evening.
xián yún tán yǐng rì yōu yōu wù huàn xīng yí jǐ dù qiū
闲 云 潭 影 日 悠 悠 , 物 换 星 移 几 度 秋 。
Leisurely clouds reflect in the deep pool, shadows linger on for a long time, objects change and stars move through several autumns.
gé zhōng dì zǐ jīn hé zài jiàn wài cháng jiāng kōng zì liú
阁 中 帝 子 今 何 在 ? 槛 外 长 江 空 自 流 。
Where is the prince in the tower now? The railings outside, the long river flows empty by itself.
