Huanggang Bamboo Building

sòng wáng yǔ chēng

huáng gāng zhī dì duō zhú dà zhě rú chuán
黄 冈 之 地 多 竹 , 大 者 如 椽 。
In Huanggang, there are many bamboos, and the large ones are as thick as beams.

zhú gōng pò zhī kū qù qí jié yòng dài táo wǎ
竹 工 破 之 , 刳 去 其 节 , 用 代 陶 瓦 。
Bamboo workers split them, hollow out their joints, and use them as pottery tiles.

bǐ wū jiē rán yǐ qí jià lián ér gōng shěng yě
比 屋 皆 然 , 以 其 价 廉 而 工 省 也 。
All the houses do this because they are inexpensive and require less labor.

zǐ chéng xī běi yú zhì dié pǐ huǐ
子 城 西 北 隅 , 雉 堞 圮 毁 ,
In the northwest corner of the city wall, the battlements are dilapidated and overgrown with weeds and filth.

zhēn mǎng huāng huì yīn zuò xiǎo lóu èr jiān yǔ yuè bō lóu tōng
蓁 莽 荒 秽 , 因 作 小 楼 二 间 , 与 月 波 楼 通 。
Thus, two small bamboo buildings were constructed, connecting with the Moon Wave Building.

yuǎn tūn shān guāng píng yì jiāng lài yōu qù liáo xiòng bù kě jù zhuàng
远 吞 山 光 , 平 挹 江 濑 , 幽 阒 辽 夐 , 不 可 具 状 。
From afar, they embrace the mountain scenery and the gentle river currents, secluded and vast, beyond description.

xià yí jí yǔ yǒu pù bù shēng dōng yí mì xuě yǒu suì yù shēng
夏 宜 急 雨 , 有 瀑 布 声 ; 冬 宜 密 雪 , 有 碎 玉 声 。
In summer, it is suitable for heavy rain, with the sound of waterfalls; in winter, it is suitable for dense snow, with the sound of broken jade.

yí gǔ qín qín diào xū chàng
宜 鼓 琴 , 琴 调 虚 畅 ;
It is suitable for playing the guqin, with a resonant and unobstructed tone;

yí yǒng shī shī yùn qīng jué yí wéi qí zǐ shēng dīng dīng rán
宜 咏 诗 , 诗 韵 清 绝 ; 宜 围 棋 , 子 声 丁 丁 然 ;
It is suitable for reciting poetry, with a clear and unique rhyme; it is suitable for playing Go, with the sound of chess pieces ringing;

yí tóu hú shǐ shēng zhēng zhēng rán
宜 投 壶 , 矢 声 铮 铮 然 ;
It is suitable for throwing darts, with the sound of arrows clanging;

jiē zhú lóu zhī suǒ zhù yě
皆 竹 楼 之 所 助 也 。
All these are aided by the bamboo building.

gōng tuì zhī xiá, pī hè chǎng yī, dài huá yáng jīn, shǒu zhí zhōu yì yī juàn
公 退 之 暇 , 被 鹤 氅 衣 , 戴 华 阳 巾 , 手 执 《 周 易 》 一 卷 ,
In his spare time after work, he wears a crane feather robe, a Huayang headband, and holds a scroll of the Book of Changes.

fén xiāng mò zuò xiāo qiǎn shì lǜ
焚 香 默 坐 , 消 遣 世 虑 。
He burns incense and sits in silence, dispelling worldly worries.

jiāng shān zhī wài dì jiàn fēng fān shā niǎo yān yún zhú shù ér yǐ
江 山 之 外 , 第 见 风 帆 沙 鸟 , 烟 云 竹 树 而 已 。
Beyond the rivers and mountains, one only sees sailing boats, sand, birds, and the misty bamboo trees.

dài qí jiǔ lì xǐng chá yān xiē sòng xī yáng
待 其 酒 力 醒 , 茶 烟 歇 , 送 夕 阳 ,
Once the effects of the wine wear off and the tea smoke clears, he watches the sunset and welcomes the bright moon;

yíng sù yuè yì zhé jū zhī shèng gài yě 。bǐ qí yún luò xīng gāo zé gāo yǐ
迎 素 月 , 亦 谪 居 之 胜 概 也 。 彼 齐 云 、 落 星 , 高 则 高 矣 ;
this is also a splendid scene of his exile. Those high-rise buildings and luxurious pavilions are indeed tall and magnificent;

jǐng gàn lì qiáo huá zé huá yǐ ; zhǐ yú zhù jì nǚ cáng gē wǔ
井 干 、 丽 谯 , 华 则 华 矣 ; 止 于 贮 妓 女 , 藏 歌 舞 ,
however, they are only for storing courtesans and hiding music and dance,

fēi sāo rén zhī shì wú suǒ bù qǔ
非 骚 人 之 事 , 吾 所 不 取 。
which is not the concern of a poet, and I do not take it.

wú wén zhú gōng yún zhú zhī wéi wǎ jǐn shí rěn
吾 闻 竹 工 云 :“ 竹 之 为 瓦 , 仅 十 稔 ;
I have heard from the bamboo craftsman: “Bamboo used as tiles lasts only ten years;

ruò chóng fù zhī dé èr shí rěn。yī wú yǐ zhì dào yǐ wèi suì
若 重 覆 之 , 得 二 十 稔 。” 噫 ! 吾 以 至 道 乙 未 岁 ,
If it is reused, it can last twenty years.” Alas! I have pursued the ultimate path since the year Yi Wei,

zì hàn lín chū chú shàng bǐng shēn yí guǎng líng
自 翰 林 出 滁 上 , 丙 申 , 移 广 陵 ;
From the Hanlin Academy to Chu Shang, in the year Bing Shen, I moved to Guangling;

dīng yǒu yòu rù xī yè
丁 酉 又 入 西 掖 ;
In the year Ding You, I entered the Western Pavilion;

wù xū suì chú rì xīn jiù suì zhī jiāo jí chú xī
戊 戌 岁 除 日 , 新 旧 岁 之 交 , 即 除 夕 。
On the eve of the year Wu Xu, the transition between the old and new years.

yǒu qí ān zhī mìng
有 齐 安 之 命 ;
I received the order from Qi’an;

jǐ hài rùn sān yuè dào jùn
己 亥 闰 三 月 到 郡 。
In the leap month of March in the year Ji Hai, I arrived at the county.

sì nián zhī jiān bēn zǒu bù xiá
四 年 之 间 , 奔 走 不 暇 ;
In these four years, I have been too busy to rest;

wèi zhī míng nián yòu zài hé chù qǐ jù zhú lóu zhī yì xiǔ hū
未 知 明 年 又 在 何 处 , 岂 惧 竹 楼 之 易 朽 乎 !
I do not know where I will be next year, so how could I fear the decay of the bamboo building!

xìng hòu zhī rén yǔ wǒ tóng zhì , sì ér qì zhī , shù sī lóu zhī bù xiǔ yě
幸 后 之 人 与 我 同 志 , 嗣 而 葺 之 , 庶 斯 楼 之 不 朽 也 !
Fortunately, those who come after me share the same aspirations as me, and they will repair it, so that this building will not decay!

xián píng èr nián bā yuè shí wǔ rì jì
咸 平 二 年 八 月 十 五 日 记 。
Recorded on the 15th day of the eighth month in the second year of Xianping.
